Anna Barsan is a film director, editor, producer, and media educator.
Her documentary work has been screened at The Guggenheim Lab, The Brooklyn Museum, the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Museum, La Mama Galleria, as well as on Showtime, Telesur, The Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, and Upworthy.
With a deep passion for media education, Barsan facilitates media literacy trainings throughout the U.S. and with political organizers from Havana to Istanbul. For two years, she worked with the celebrated Allied Media Projects to coordinate the “Filmmaking & Beyond” track at the Allied Media Conference in Detroit in partnership with organizations like the MIT Open Documentary Lab and the Sundance Institute. As a professor at SUNY Empire State in NYC, she was a recipient of the Arthur Imperatore Community Fellowship and developed courses on media activism and documentary filmmaking. As the supervising producer at The Laura Flanders Show, she creates progressive independent media featuring in-depth coverage of the Movement for Black Lives, indigenous water protectors of Standing Rock, the 2016 RNC and DNC, and conducts interviews with inspiring thinkers and movement builders like Congressman Keith Ellison, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!, Alicia Garza, NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman, and Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw.
From 2011-2015 Anna co-directed the documentary series, Signified, along with friend and collaborator Jessie Levandov, featuring interviews with LGBTQ activists and artists throughout the US and Latin America. Signified launched at the Guggenheim Lab in NYC, has screened in over 70 countries worldwide, and is available for free use as a teaching tool on LGBTQ rights, sexuality, and breaking down the gender binary.
Anna consults with and develops media trainings for organizations such as the Pan-American Development Foundation, National Organizing Institute, the University of London, University of Michigan - Spectrum Center, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Audre Lorde Project, NGO training center and The New School undergraduate film and media program.
Anna holds an M.A. in film and new media studies from The New School and a B.A. in international relations and global media studies from the University of Michigan.
